HOUSEBOAT: March 29 to April 5, 2009 (6 spots remain)
Over the last few years we’ve had some simply spectacular trips to the Agua Boa Amazon Lodge for peacock bass and a host of other exciting game species. This year's trip was GREAT and we have reserved the same week for spring 2009 along with two weeks on the NEW houseboat option! For those of you that have not had the good fortune to experience one of these trips, the Agua Boa River is a small, clear blackwater tributary of the Amazon River. Its waters contain all three species of peacock bass including the butterfly, the spotted and the temenis, which is the species you see in all the photographs of peacock bass from the Amazon Basin. Peacock bass are one of the strongest gamefish in the world and they are known for ferocious topwater strikes, gill-rattling jumps and unstoppable runs. What makes the Agua Boa River unique is that its peacocks can often be sightfished over white sand bars or along the edges of tributaries and interior lagos. This is a spectacular way to take a big peacock and something you’ll not soon forget! These sightfished peacocks can be taken on poppers and subsurface streamers often in very shallow water.
In addition to peacock bass found in the Agua Boa River System, other species include payara (a fish with Count Dracula-like teeth and an attitude to match), piranha, pirarucu (up to 200lbs. and often called the tarpon of the Amazon), arowana (great jumpers and they too take topwater flies), jancunda and countless other species. We feel this fishery is world class and should be experienced by any dedicated fly angler.
Accommodations at the Agua Boa Amazon Lodge are in spacious, air-conditioned bungalows equipped with private baths, hot showers and lots of room to spread out. After a great day on the river, you’ll appreciate the central building’s beautiful bar (with satellite TV and DVD player) and the comfortable dining room where delicious meals are served. Just outside the main lodge is a 20-meter swimming pool and another bar area that overlooks the river. You should look at the photos on our website to get a better feel for the beauty of this spot.

Yucatan: Tarpon Extravaganza

Yucatan: Tarpon Extravaganza
June 11 - 19, 2008 (1 spots remain)
Over the past three years, we've experienced many great adventures chasing baby tarpon on the coast of the Yucatan. We now have a growing contingent of certified baby tarpon junkies. Fish of ten, twenty, even some big babies scratching that forty pound mark, have tested the skill and tackle of these many loyal followers. These anglers (and you know who you are) have essentially cut their tarpon teeth on these cooperative juvenile fish. With as much excitement as we have had chasing these babies, the lure of giant tarpon still captivates the back of many of these angler's minds. It's hard to ignore the heart-stopping experience of 100 pounds of airborne, gill-rattling silver at the end of your line. The excitement of that split second, the moment when a giant tarpon eats your fly, is one of the greatest moments in all of angling. But not all of us have the endurance or the inclination to suffer the brain damage that goes along with fishing exclusively for these giants. This has led us here at Angling Destinations to a great idea... why not combine both, the babies and the giants, into one "tarpon extravaganza".
We will begin our double-header tarpon tour in the quiet little fishing village of San Felipe on the Yucatan’s west coast. Consider this a pre-game warm up. For three days you can polish your skills on these confidence-boosting baby tarpon and hopefully sate yourselves on the tarpon experience. Then we will move up the coast to a different fishery and the “big leagues”. Here, we will try our hand chasing the giant tarpon of Isla Holbox. From a visual and technical standpoint, there is not much difference in how you approach either the babies or the giants. But there is one critical difference… a ten pound baby tarpon won't make you go weak at the knees when first sighted or cause you to break out in a cold sweat when it charges your fly or rip the rod out of your hands when it hits your fly. A giant tarpon just might! So if you think you have the inclination to pursue these big boys, join us on the Yucatan Tarpon Extravaganza in June 2008. With any luck, this trip will combine the rod bending action of the coast’s prolific baby tarpon fishery with the ultimate thrill of hooking and hopefully landing a giant from Isla Holbox. This is the ying and yang of tarpon fishing! If you want to experience something truly unique, give us a call and we’ll fill you in on all the details.
The cost will be $3,490.00 per person which includes six full days of guided fishing, eight nights lodging, all meals and all airport transfers are included. Limit 7 anglers.
